Uganda election: Apology over voting delays

Uganda's electoral commission has apologised over delays in opening polling stations as people queue to vote in crucial presidential elections.

Difficulties in transporting electoral materials caused the delays, it said.
President Yoweri Museveni, 71, is seeking to extend his 30-year rule, in a race widely seen as the tightest in the East African state's history.
Seven opposition candidates are running against him. His main challenger is his former physician, Kizza Besigye.
Mr Besigye has said he does not think the election will be free and fair.

Former Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi is also seen as a leading contender for the presidency.
Almost five hours after the vote was meant to begin, the electoral commission issued a statement acknowledging that some polling stations had not yet opened.
It added that despite the delays, voting will not be extended.
The BBC's Catherine Byaruhanga reports from the capital, Kampala, that thousands of people who had queued for hours got visibly frustrated over the delays.
Security forces were sent in to calm the situation, she adds.

A candidate needs to secure more than 50% of the vote to win outright and avoid a run-off with the second-ranked contender.
Ugandans are also voting in parliamentary and local elections.
Human rights groups have reported an intensifying government crackdown on opposition leaders, their supporters and the media during the election campaign.
One person was killed on Monday in clashes between Mr Besigye's supporters and the security forces in the capital, Kampala.

Mr Museveni has been in office since winning a five-year guerrilla war in 1986, and he is one of Africa's longest-serving leaders.
His final term was meant to end in 2006, but in 2005 he won a campaign to lift the constitutional term limits.
Mr Besigye has unsuccessfully challenged his former comrade-in-arms in the last three presidential elections
Mr Mbabazi is another former ally of President Museveni. He served as prime minister in 2011-2014, when he was dismissed after announcing he would launch a rival presidential bid.

During the election campaign the two opposition candidates accused the president of corruption and criticised his economic policies.
Mr Museveni dismissed the allegations as fiction.
Major issues for voters also include persistently high unemployment and poor quality of public services.

Kenya 'kills' al-Shabab intelligence chief in Somalia

A Kenyan air strike has killed the intelligence chief of Somalia's militant Islamist group al-Shabab, an army statement has said.

Mohammed Karatey and 10 other al-Shabab commanders were killed in the strike in southern Somalia on 8 February, it added.
He played a key role in last month's deadly attack on a Kenyan military base in Somalia, the army said.
Al-Shabab has not yet commented on the claim that Karatey has been killed.

Kenyan warplanes have targeted al-Shabab positions in Somalia on numerous occasions since 2011

Kenya contributes more than 4,000 troops to the 22,000-strong AU force that is in Somalia helping the UN-backed government battle al-Shabab, which is part of al-Qaeda.
Al-Shabab said it had killed about 100 troops in the attack on the Kenyan base in el-Ade town on 15 January.

If voting was like taking a pledge, just simple like.

‪#‎UgandaDecides‬. On grounds that there is a lot Ballot stuffing in the Elections of Uganda, I would prefer it my own or put up my own way; just like Ma breezy would opt for by taking the pledge way and see how Ballot stuffing will continue.

In every polling station, each and every person just coming in and just takes the pledge like " I Kim Jacobs pledge to vote for the one and only Besigye" you portray your love to a particular candidate without fear or favour. Just begin against that vote rigging and ballot stuffing.

Have you ever taken time to notice Besigye and Museveni glancing at each other whenever they meet. Wanna see you asking yourself that question. Me I noticed it during the previous presidential debate, the hurriedly hand check that doesn’t last longer a hug you get for your opponent after fighting. Remember love is one of the greatest commandment in Bible. It had been stated in many insistences; verses in the bible like love your neighbor as you love yourself. Hehehe (evil laugh), during these elections and presidential rallies; we expect riots and smoking tear gas instead of smoking shisha and marijuana. So, be embraced to preach the love into the soldier or police officer who will be in position to fire to you a canister full of teargas. Us those verses well- alter dem verses about love to that soldier; let them be your armor. Just hit it unto him like “Love your neighbor as you love yourself”. Of recent, we have seen large masses of people showing much love for their rightful candidates.

People portraying love for their candidate and they are even willing to die for them. Many of those scenarios are willing to be seen after the elections.

VALENTINE’S DAY IN PARIS

THE FIRST ANNUAL PRETTY MUCH WORLD FAMOUS VALENTINY WRITING CONTEST!!!

Valen-tiny because the stories are not very long and are written for little people :)

The Contest: since writing for children is all about “big emotion for little people” (I forget who said that, but someone did so I put it in quotes!) and Valentines Day is all about emotion, write a Valentines story appropriate for children (children here defined as ages 12 and under) maximum 214 words in which someone is grumpy! Your story can be poetry or prose, sweet, funny, surprising or anything in between, but it will only count for the contest if it includes someone grumpy (can be the main character but doesn’t have to be) and is 214 words max (get it? 2/14 for Valentines Day :) You can go under the word count but not over! Title is not included in the word count. No illustration notes please!

VALENTINE’S DAY IN PARIS

Jakey got up early in the morning, surprisingly; he found an email from her long time girlfriend Jane.
Saying, "You will be travelling to Paris...Please contact Sue for your ticket details".

Not many will ever understand when they see Jakey’s picture in newspapers with boxers only jumping to this great news...The joy of going to Paris... It was like Super Mario’s journey to save her girlfriend. Though still confused on whether to call for a press conference and announce the good news. So, he called a friend to help with one trouser-it was short but he was ready to pass off as a Muslim cleric.

So after packing and dressing up the time to be picked came. How do I explain this moment when he opened the gate to enter the taxi. He felt like The Late Mandela leaving Rhodes Island prison after 27 years only that in his case, there was no crowd to welcome him but a mean cab guy waiting for him.
You know what cut Jakey short of his joy; he received an email again from Jane. The email was saying the flight had been cancelled due to unavoidable circumstances. Jakey slammed the taxi door, hit the phone so hard on the ground and left unhappy back to his apartment.
